Meet Annika Ek - Functional Nutritionist

Hello, I am Annika Ek, and I am a Functional Nutritionist and Educator. I work with people from around the globe helping them avoid, reverse or reduce symptoms of autoimmunity. It is my mission to get the word out to all women, their daughters, sisters and mothers, that a woman's risk of developing one or more autoimmune conditions may be as a high as 1 in 4. This largely hidden epidemic is getting in the way of women's and their families quality of life, and there is much that can be done to reverse this trend. As the mother of two daughters and part of family where autoimmunity and inflammatory conditions has touched 3 generations (including myself), this is my life's work.

I entered the field as a holistic health professional more than 15 years ago. It was disabling stomach pain following the birth of my two daughters that first brought me to this career change - I had to fix myself since the offer to take a "prescription medication for life" was not an option for me. With a degree in economics and past work in IT, I began a new career that I quickly realized was my true passion. I healed my stomach, but soon faced several other health challenges, including autoimmunity. My determination to find my way back to vibrant health and my refusal to accept what the conventional medical model had to offer as a long-term solution brought me to the functional approach of medicine and nutrition. As I applied the power of “root cause resolution" my symptoms went away and I am now back to living my best life again, and I want the same for my clients.

I meet my clients where they are and support them as they heal, while also empowering them with the knowledge, tools and skills they need to take an active role in the creation of their own health. In addition to working with clients one-on-one, I also offer group programs and have online self-study programs coming during 2017.

I have earned several diplomas including Registered Holistic Nutritionist (RHN) from Canadian School of Natural Nutrition in 2003, Chartered Herbalist (CH) from Dominion Herbal College in 2001, and Homeopathy and Heilkunst from Hahneman College for Heilkunst in 2007. I am a member of the Canadian Association of Natural Nutritional Practitioners (CANNP) and the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM). I began work in private practice in 2004.

In recent years my studies have included Environmental Health from Arizona Center of Integrative Medicine and with Environmental Toxins Expert Lara Adler, Nutrigenomics (Dr. Ben Lynch), Digestive Intensive (Andrea Nakayama CNC, CNE, CHHC) and Amino Acid Therapy (Julia Ross MA, MFT, NNTS). I continue to educate myself and follow the leaders within Functional Medicine such as the renowned Dr. Datis Kharrazian, Dr. Perlmutter and Dr. Hyman, among many others.

I was born and raised in Sweden and moved to Canada more than 20 years ago. I now live in Ottawa with my husband, two daughters and our red poodle Miro.
